HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sharon @ Demented Kat!

(meow is the pretty girl in the center)

I call Sharon "meow" for obvious reasons and I really wanna wish her a BIG Happy Birthday. Thanks for being there and you will always be my "chee mui" although nowadays I don't see you that often because you have found your tom cat. :D If you think I'm going to forgive you for that Melaka trip because its your birthday. I'm sorry voman, that's not going to happen! *lol* We'll definitely still go for our Esquire Kitchen adventure again. Take care and I wish you all the best ya! :D

And also to a good friend of mine, Jessica, who left for the States on Saturday morning, wishing you all the best and study hard. It's really sad seeing a lot of close friends of mine who I can really click with leave Malaysia. I wish one day I could leave and continue my studies abroad. When is it going to be my turn? :\ *sigh*

Sunday, is the day that I really love chilling out at my usual coffee place, San Francisco Coffee house. A nice cup of ice black coffee would do fine for me. I got a call from Shelley on Wednesday asking me if I would like to run a show for her. I was skeptical at first because I've never done a show having to set up everything from scratch. I thought to myself and said "Why not?", after all it's a good start exposing myself to live scenarios after reading everything from text books.

I was looking forward to it since it was an easy setup, knowing that there would be only three main performers on stage and following up with open-mic performers. I've always kept one thing in mind when I do a show, THINGS CAN GO WRONG, which applies to anyone. True enough, things didn't go well in the beginning. I've done sound in Bankok Jazz three times and this is my first time setting up a system catering for a small number of audience. The easy bit about Bangkok Jazz, everything is there. All I have to do is to get my ass there and balance the levels. Last night was fine till I found out that there was no sound coming out from the main speakers. I had to boost every damn signal just to get a pinch of sound. Something is not right and my biggest guess would be not having a power amplifier to drive the speakers. Man, was I stressed out because I had to depend on myself without any guidance and only knowledge on what I've learned in college.

Time to cook up a plan. We were only left with three things that will produce sound, which were two small guitar practise amps, Marshall and Fender, and a decent Ibanez guitar amp which was the best amp amongst all three, sound wise. That was our last resort. Having to use two small practise amps to fill the damn hall and the other amp as a monitor for the musicians on stage sounded like a funny idea, but it worked! Thank god that it wasn't such a big hall. The next challenge I had to face was the threat for all sound guys, FEEDBACK! This is where I had to go through everything that had been thaught to me in class in my head! This is where paying RM1,080 every month comes in handy.. hehehe.. :D The show started and thank god there was no feedback during the performance. I was nervous, I didn't want anything to go wrong for Shelley. I wanted her last gig to go well before she and Az flies back to Boston.

Fun night for me and I managed practise what I've learned. I can't believe the show turned out well although I wasn't happy with the sound and having two small practise amps instead of two huge speakers which became speaker stands in the end. *lol* I really want to thank Shelley and Az for giving me a chance to put what ever I've learned in class into good use. Conclusion, don't look down on those puny practise amps, you'll never know when they'll come in handy! heh! :P

Ahh.... Port Dickson trip is over! It's been awhile sinced I last traveled. Before anyone asked, most of you know that I was NOT at the rave but I was just chilling at the hotel. heh! :P

(sui lin and cris pondering..)

(..me after they pondered)

(the jamness..)

Having to go through the jam Cris remembered HHH telling him to turn out into the other exit and not the Seremban Port Dickson exit...

cris: "HHH.. said is not this exit but the other.."
leo: "errr... ok"

*minutes later*

leo: "dude... are you sure you going the right way?"
cris: "yeap! according to HHH."

*after many many many minutes*

leo: "dude... i think... I just saw the sign Alor Gajah.. and er.. the next exit.. is AYER KEROH MELAKA!!!!"
cris: "er...."
leo: "this is soooo not right weiiiii!!"
suilin: *laughing a all the way*

Yes, the trip to PD took us 3 hours because we had to exit to Melaka to make a U-turn. Sharon was on her way from Singapore eventually caught up with us on the highway some where near Alor Gajah and we were suppose to meet her at PD earlier. *lol*

(the hotel lobby)

(the check-in counter)

(cool lighting and environment)

(cris and sharon chilling at the balcony)

The hotel was really nice. Spent most of my time playing games on my notebook and watching the tube after dropping them off at the rave. Went for lunch the next day and had coffee with Cris after sending everyone back.

(the first dish that arrived..)

(..and the ONLY freaking dish with many sad faces. sui lin being the most obvious)

End of story... :D

Games, the only entertainment that can really kill time. Only problem I face now is games these days require hardcore money sucking graphic cards! *sigh* So, what do you do when you can't play new eye candy games? Get your classic adventure games and start playing it!

(Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis)

(The Secret of Monkey Island)

(Monkey Island, LeChuck's Revenge)

Ahhhh.... the good old classics, only in 256 colors! You'll be suprised with the amount of detail squeezed into it. Nothing beats Lucasarts adventure series. :D Brings back memories of the good old high school days cracking your heads trying to solve every damn puzzle and talking about amongst your friends. :) THEY DON'T MAKE GAMES LIKE THIS ANYMORE AND IT SUCKS! Syberia 1 & 2 and Still Life are the only new adventure games around. Lucasarts was also planning to release their all new Full Throttle and also Sam & Max but they abandoned it! WHY DAMN IT!? WHY?! *sigh*

Oh yah, I just found this. If you think I'm a really big fan of monkey island, well, this is what I call REAL hardcore fans.
Episode 1
Episode 2
Episode 3
Episode 4
Episode 5
Episode 6
Go watch and you'll know what I mean.. hehehehe :D

Yesterday was the last day of the Jazz & Rhythm Festival @ Sunrise Mnt. Kiara. it's gonna be a very boring weekend for me next week. The only thing that I've been looking forward to is a good night with live jazz bands without having to spend to much money. Call me stingy but I'm still studying and living off my parents cash. I don't really mind paying if I had the cash to enjoy a good dosage of music. For those who are insterested in jazz, I suggest you go to www.alldatjazz.com. A great site with loads of updates on our local jazz scene.

For those of you that have been wondering what is jazz all about? Well, I'm gonna do a post today to give some of you a brief idea on how to listen and appreciate jazz. Before I go on, I would just like to say what ever I'm going to say now is roughly my own way to appreaciate jazz. It might be right, it might be wrong, so if any of you has something to say about it, comments are welcome :)

"Everything sounds messy la..", "Why sound so weird one wei?", "Sounds damn coplicated la..", those were coming out from friends who were still new to jazz. I can understand why cause I was one of them last time. heh! :P To help solve that problem, I'm going to break down my explanation into different points.

Smooth Jazz
- before you start listening to heavy jazz stuff, try listening to smooth jazz first. A jazz style that is simple and relaxing. Some would call it louge music. Mostly played at the hotel lobby and most fine dining restaurants. Well if you want, you can also go looking around for Smooth Jazz compilation CDs. Easy and sweet melody to follow for a start.

Groove
- listen to the groove or rhythm of that tune. You'll feel yourself naturaly moving to it. The only thing that stops your from feeling the groove is when the rhythm goes off-beat. Meaning, it gives you an illusion that the rhythm is NOT on time when it is actually IN time. This where you need to follow something to give you that constant beat. Either you follow the hi-hat of the drums or tap to the bass line or something else that has a constant beat. Try to look for the constant beat hiding somewhere in the tune itself. Takes a while to really notice it but you'll get there with practise or just simply let your body's internal rhythm do the job by taping consistantly without having the off-beats distract you. :D

Style
- when you are done listening to lighter jazz tunes and feeling the groove you would wanna know the different styles of jazz. Latin, Bossa Nova, Acid Jazz, Fushion Jazz, Smooth Jazz, etc. which are the few examples that you can go do your research on. By listening to the rhythm and knowing the difference between them, you can distinguish the different styles of jazz that you're listening to. Mind you that there are other ways to tell the difference in style, and rhythm is just one of them. :)

Tone
- this is where it really hits me. When you're listening to a particular jazz tune, try picking out a favourite instrument that you like. Every instrument has its own distinctive sound even if it's the same instrument. Tone is the color of sound and the simplest way to understand this is by relating it to your color chart. Let's take the color green for an example. Green is just a general term you use to generalize that color but there are also different shades of green from light to dark green. Same applies to an instrument. A guitar is just a guitar but every guitar has its own unique sound to it just like the different shades of green. When an instrument has really nice tone to it, I'll normally get goose bumps and it's like seeing a shade of green that you really like ALOT! hehhehe :P So, try to listen to a particular intrument tone in DETAIL and soon it'll hit hard you when you find that tone apealing.

Singing
- try singing to that particular tune, not aloud but inside you. When you listen to a song, you'll noticed that you're actually singing that song inside you and not aloud. When you listen to jazz, try listening to what the musician is playing in detail, you'll tend to enjoy it without listening to the band as a whole. Like you'll noticed the singer instead of the whole band. Do that by listening to a choice of instrument. Make your choice of instrument to be the singer instead. A good way to start is try listening to a saxophonist in detail. You'll feeling like it's actually singing to you without using words. Like how you would hum to a singer without knowing the lyrics. :)

That's all I can think off at the moment to give you a head start on how you can appreaciate jazz. We listen to music for pleasure like how we listen to pop or rock music. But if listen to it in detail, you'll start to feel how a jazz muscian feels when he's expressing himself on his instruments. It's as though he is just singing to you with loads of passion and expression. That's the beauty of jazz because it's unrehearsed music that is made up mostly by improvising. I'm not a good writer and I hope you can actually understand what I'm saying here. This is what you get for not reading a lot and I have to start the habit for reading. heh! Cheers! :D
