Karaoke...

Just had a random thought the other day. I bet most of you have actually experienced this, having a night out with your family or friends for karaoke. Everytime when someone starts singing the first thing they'll say is... "Eh! More ECHO! More ECHO!" Who started this evil trend of having more reverb/echo during karaoke sessions? The old chinese uncles?

Remember the music from the 80's? Not sure when the reverb unit was invented though but it was sure a breakthrough back then. It's to a point that every piece of music back then had over powering reverb/echo in it. Why? Because it was the IN thing to do! :) A way to flaunt their technology back then. How is this related to the "More Echo" during karaoke sessions?

Blame your parents! They were so used to having loads of reverb/echo to their vocals due to the music trend back then. We've all been brain washed! I bet when you were younger your parents did say "More ECHO nicer! Listen! Listen!" *pumps up the reverb/echo* "Trust daddy/mommy, now it sounds better! Right?!" and we had to agree. So, you can blame your parents and the music trend back then for creating the "More Echo" syndrome amongst us all.

**note : the "More Echo" theory is just a random thought which made sense to me. So, if you think you've got a better theory behind this, by all means share! :D

Got the best complain yesterday...
"How come the live music here sounds so crappy when the playback from CD sounds good?"

me: (silence.. just to lazy to explain to that person)

Comparing a fully mixed and mastered CD to mixing something on the spot with bare minimum system... great. Then again, if the mix on the CD is bad the output would be bad too.

Let's see if I break this down nicely...

- instrument tracks are individually fine tuned with a proper EQ unit
LIVE (bare minimum EQ)
- unable to boost and cut specific frequencies

- enough time to do multiple takes before mixing
LIVE
- plug and play with NO SOUNDCHECK

- everything is BALANCE
LIVE
- I can't get out from the console because it's crowded
- I can't monitor the levels when I'm located BEHIND the speakers

- vocals are loud and crisp

- some vocalist just don't project, low input signals
- increasing gain would increase the chance of feedback
- bare minimum EQ
- inconsistent vocal dynamics

- controlled environment with good acoustics
LIVE
- bad acoustics

- everything is enhance digitally using effects and touch ups

- nothing can be enhance properly

- concentrating the mix of one band

- I've got 8 different performers with different styles of music
- some didn't turn up for soundcheck

- acoustic guitar sounds good

- semi acoustic guitars plugged with strumming sounds bad
- not enough mics to mic them up

Overall, I'm actually quite happy with Reza's mix yesterday. With proper sound check and I was able to run in and out to monitor him because it wasn't pack at that time. Yes, I was running up and down like an idiot. Can't wait to do Estranged album launch on the 28.
