Friday and Saturday was an experience to remember. Genting Jazz Festival was just insane! I remember writing a Jazz post a couple of years ago which is hidden somewhere in my archive which Eugene took to use it on alldatjazz.com. The hype came back to me again! I'm just gonna write about the few acts that hit me hard and those who know me, I do get damn emo when I listen to something different and amazing.
Entered the hall without knowing what's gonna happen. I can honestly say that I went to Jazz Fest without knowing any of the performers. Haha! All I had in my mind was "International acts, go in, listen, enjoy!". First band that went on stage, played, I had a second thought in my mind, "God.. don't tell me the sound is gonna be this bad throughout the whole show?". Honestly I was quite dissapointed with the sound. I've been to the same hall for Lady Salsa and it sounded big. Oh well, put that a side, here's a list of bands that caught my attention. :)
TangalgoA three piece band that sounded dark! The sort of sound and music that I would picture for a movie like Constantine. I'm just speechless when it comes to their music arrangement. The build up, the climax, everything was just right when it hit me. Lines were so mellow yet it harsh at times, it has this pinch of anger in it. I don't even know how to explain it cause my england not so the powderful. The dynamics was just so... ARGHHH!... can't even explain! The sudden attacks here and there without you knowing it, gives you that muka terberak. I was lost for words, I was just adding random drum loops and synth sounds in my head throughout the whole damn show. It was how I picture my electronica stuff would sound like. I think Az would know the image I'm painting if he's reading this... right right? Hehe! :D
AcoustiqueThe female vocalist of this band gave me the chills. My equation for her would be, Enya + Tori Amos + a pinch of Bjork + Jazz = HER! If you were to throw her into Tangalgo, it would have been MY ultimate band. Her vocal control, her dynamics, her movements (hmmm...) made her stood out. Talking about stealing the lime light, well, she did. I didn't even pay any attention to the band (not because of her movements), hell I wasn't even looking at the stage at that time. I was so spaced out because of the tone of her voice. I can safely say she's my next favourite female vocalist with a unique tone.
Hazmat ModineI didn't really expect much from this bunch of New Yorkers. Thought they would sound like any other band that night. Haha! Don't get me wrong, bands for both nights were amazing. Being me, I just wanted something different, both music and sound wise for this jazz festival. :) Didn't have much expectations with this band till the damn harmonica solo started the set. If my eyes could have gone any bigger it would. I love sound manipulation, I love seeing someone taking an ordinary instrument and not playing it way you should to get a different feel out of everything. This guy did! I will label him the beat box of harmonica! The band itself was amazing, having to cover a few styles of jazz was one thing, the sound as a band gave me a different vibe. It's like, you're listening to your standard styles but something was just different. A really big band but they didn't sound cluttered. It was more like every instrument was somehow unique with it's own sound that it didn't clash, might be the arrangement? Didn't really pay much attention because of one damn reason, first song, RAGGAE MON'!
*WARNING! SHORT BUT VERY EMO POST BELOW! I'M DEAD SERIOUS ABOUT WHAT I WRITE BELOW!* If there's any music that would put me into a trance, raggae would do the job. Wan from Funk Mob pointed at me, laughed and said "TENGOK DAH STONE!". HOW NOT TO BE?! IT'S FREAKIN' RAGGAE! I FREAKIN' LOVE RAGGAE! The best part, it was blues after that! I WAS COMPLETE HIGH WHEN THIS BAND PLAYED! THEY HIT MY EMO BUTTON BIG TIME! I really wish I could have that feeling I had when they played raggae. I don't get any big raggae concerts in large halls here. That was the FIRST! It was like the shortest huge ass raggae concert of my life! I don't know bout you guys reading this but I really Really REAAAAALLYYYY WISH I COULD GET THAT FEELING LAST NIGHT AGAIN! I'm actually feeling sad now writting about this because I CAN'T GET THAT FEELING I HAD LAST NIGHT AGAIN! HONESTLY, IT WAS THE BEST MUSIC EXPERIENCE EVER WHEN THAT DAMN RAGGAE SONG CAME ON! THE IMPACT WAS JUST TO MUCH! I EVEN HAD ASK FOR A CIGGY WHEN IT STARTED! CALL ME STRANGE BUT IT HITS ME EMOTIONALLY TILL NOW! I'M STILL THIKING ABOUT THE DAMN FEELING RIGHT NOW! ARGGGH!!!!!!!! *sigh* I'm not being pretentious, those of u who do not know me well yet, this is me when I hit emo side of music. :(
Back on track. I kinda lost to mood after typing all that and thinking about it now. So to end my post, I just wanna say it was another one of the shows that I will never forget.
ps:- Everything I wrote about the bands above is just my own personal opinion. Your opinions and comments are welcome. :)
